4 Guidelines for a Healthy Burning Man Experience

An empty desert is transformed into a temporary metropolis, Black Rock City, through the course of several days. But as exciting as it may seem, it is not for the weak of heart to spend a week in this desert environment.

Temperatures often reach 100 degrees during the day. Daily occurrences include dense storms of dust. The sand of the playa is heavily alkaline and sticks to anything. And getting enough sleep is the last thing on anybody’s mind, of course. So how are Burners on the playa staying healthy?

  • Have One Gallon of Water a Day

Throughout the day and night, you may roam, bike, and dance in desert conditions, so we recommend you double or even triple the amount of water you will usually drink at home.

Signs of dehydration should also be closely monitored, namely feeling faint, tired, or hyperthermic, reduced urination, and rapid heartbeat. If you feel this way, we suggest starting to drink coconut water or something which includes sugar and salt to help maintain the moisture in your blood vessels.

4 Burning Man Tips

  • Put Together a First Aid Kit

Throughout the day and night, you may roam, bike, and dance in desert conditions, so we recommend you double or even triple the amount of water you will usually drink at home.

Although Burning Man’s medical clinics are well equipped with everything you might need, we urge you to pack some necessary things: band-aids, antibiotic ointment, sports tape, moleskin, ace bandages, pain killers, Emergen-C® packets, saline drops for your eyes, and saline nasal spray for your nose.

Burning Man 1st Aid

  • Prepare for the (Dust) Storms

Dust storms are a part of life on the playa, so most people have to wear goggles and some kind of scarf or mask to cover their face and nose. Storms of dust can be discombobulating, too. Regarding some vehicles that may not be able to see you, keep a watchful eye out.

  • Avoid Playa Foot

“Playa foot” is a problem caused by the playa’s alkali dust— basically, it’s a chemical burning on your feet. We advise that you keep your feet wrapped out on the playa to avoid it, clean your feet thoroughly every day, and apply moisturizer before going to bed and before going out.
